About me

Welcome to my blog. Who am I, you ask?

I am Jethro De Decker, a 26 year old South African actuary and expedition cyclist!

Traveling by bicycle allows one to get off the beaten track, and discover places that you would never have seen otherwise. It’s a different way of exploring new areas. It’s exciting and you reach your destinations using only human power.

Why the Tour d’Afrique? Because it’s an adventure. Because it’s a challenge. I would to like see more of Africa, and what better way than to cross it on a bicycle? To cross a continent, especially Africa, using nothing but my own energy is an opportunity I cannot miss!

Also, I’ve been living in Asia and Europe for the past few years and now its time to experience more of what Africa has to offer.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore.
Dream.
Discover.

  1. Jethro I had a look at your images from the Himalayas, made me very envious. A good friend of ours cycled the Tour d’Afrique two years ago. I can put you in contact with her.

  2. Hello Jethro,

What an amazing site, keep up the peddaling. All the best with TDA, it’s exciting, following every day. I’m sure you’ll be very relieved when you finally reach Cape Town.

    Travel safe,
    Mozart.
